ABOUT BRECKS
A Fishing Industry Mainstay since 1948
From humble beginnings in the 1940’s Brecks officially entered the fishing industry in 1948.
Stamping the Dartee and Sparky lures in the basement of their home, Maude and George Breckenridge founded Brecks. The fledgeling company dealt in various lines in its beginnings. A very popular insect repellent named Ole Time Woodsman was bottled in the Brecks facility. Sharpe rods were also a part of the early history.
Then in 1949 Brecks was appointed the exclusive Canadian distributor for Mepps. Brecks took the then relatively unknown French brand and made it the Canadian giant it became in the following years.
David Breckenridge, George and Maude’s son, took over as George retired in 1964 and grew the business significantly.
Brecks became an extension of the manufacturer for Mepps and began assembly and packaging in Canada. In 1983 Brecks added the Mister Twister and Maxima brands to its selection of products, under exclusive distribution agreements for the Canadian market.
In 1989 Brecks went back to its manufacturing roots and became international with the acquisition of Williams, one of Canada’s oldest lure brands and renowned for their genuine silver and 24K gold finishes.
In 2003 the expansion continued by acquiring the J.A. Green Company, manufacturer of the Mooselook Wobbler. David Breckenridge passed away suddenly in 2012. His wife Sharon Gautrey, who was an integral part of the company for decades, took over the mantle of leadership.
In 2013 Brecks started an acquisition spree by first buying the Savant Spoons brand, now integrated into Mooselook, and then in 2014 the Thomas Delaney company, manufacturer of the Lake Clear Wabbler. Brecks now markets five brands. The three brands owned outright by Brecks are sold worldwide.
